MCATOT

MCATOT is calculated as the sum of the total number of points scored on each section of the MoCA. Each section of the MoCA is worth a varying amount of points:

  • Visuospatial/Executive: 5 possible points

  • Naming: 3 possible points

  • Attention: 6 possible points

  • Languge: 3 possible points

  • Abstraction: 2 possible points

  • Delayed recall: 5 possible points

  • Orientation: 6 possible points

The total number of points possible on the MoCA is 30. If a participant has 12 years or less of education, one point is added to the total score. Education level can be found in the EDUCYRS variable in the SOCIOECO table. Some participants only have EDUCYRS data that was collected as an enum (rather than a continuous variable). This data is stored in EDUCYRS_ENUM. We cannot calculate MCATOT for participants who have a value of 2 (12 to 16 years of education) or 4 (Unknown) because we can not be sure whether or not they have 12 years or less of education.
